bitlife has always had a strange advantage over most life simulation games: it does not really care what kind of person you want to be. You can build a respectable career, settle down with a family, or make one terrible decision and spend the next twenty years dealing with it.

That idea feels even more interesting in the current version of the game.

The newest content pushes BitLife beyond simply choosing a job and watching your character grow older. Ultimate Fighter Mode lets a character start with street fights and work toward a world championship, with training, different fighting specialties, leagues, and more than 100 fighting moves.

But there is another direction that changes the feel of a life completely: becoming a movie director. The new Movie Director Expansion Pack lets you direct movies, work with major talent, compete at film festivals, and see whether your fictional career produces a blockbuster or a complete flop.

What makes this interesting is not really the number of new activities. It is the way they can change the story you are creating.

A character who starts with very little can become a famous fighter. Another might spend decades building a career behind the camera. Someone else might completely ignore success and turn their life into a collection of bizarre decisions.

That is where BitLife still feels different. The game gives you a simple interface, but the stories that come out of it can become surprisingly complicated. You are not following one carefully written character. You are deciding what kind of mess, success, failure, or unexpected story that character becomes.

And with BitLife now eight years old, that basic idea is still doing most of the heavy lifting.
